Evangelicals agree that the Bible is God's inerrant word. But we sometimes differ on how to relate the messages of the Old and New Testaments. Without a basic understanding of this crucial matter, it is difficult to know how to use the Testaments to formulate either doctrine or practice.
For example: Was Israel the OT Church—are OT promises to God's national people fulfilled in the church today? Or, is Mosaic Law binding on believers now—are twentieth-century Christians to obey the Ten Commandments, including sabbath observance?
In this book, thirteen noted evangelical theologians discuss, fairly but clearly, the continuity/discontinuity debate in regard to six basic categories: theological systems, hermeneutics, salvation, the Law of God, the people of God, and kingdom promises.
Covering much more than the differences between Covenant Theology and Dispensationalism, this work of distinguished evangelical scholarship will fuel much profitable study and discussion.

Given the evermore apparent failure of modern psychotherapies and a growing discomfort with pharmacological strategies, many churches are reaffirming the sufficiency and power of the Scriptures to change lives.
To aid churches in ministering to broken and hurting people, the authors of Counsel from the Cross present a counseling model based on Scripture and powered by the work of the wonderful counselor, Jesus Christ. Through careful exegesis and helpful case studies, they demonstrate how to provide consistently biblical, gospel-centered counseling and explain why it is important to do so.
The authors’ combined backgrounds—one, a woman trained in biblical counseling and the other, a male professor of practical theology—bring balance to this work, making it relevant for those who counsel as part of pastoral ministry and for all involved in mentoring or discipleship.
'A triumph of a maturing biblical counseling movement. Elyse Fitzpatrick, a counselor with uncommon insight into common problems, teams with Dennis Johnson, a seminary professor with a firm fix on justification and the centrality of the gospel, to produce a cross-centered counseling tool. Expect to find the refreshing intersection of the liberating truth of the cross and the power of the gospel to move counselees and impart hope. This book is a major contribution not only to biblical counseling but also to the person in the pew.'
Tedd Tripp, Pastor; international conference speaker; author, Shepherding a Child's Heart
'Broken people remain so because they never truly understand the nature or extent of God's love. Following the pattern of Paul's letter to the Ephesians, this book triggers worship and hope with exhilarating descriptions of the gospel of Christ and shows us how to live out the love and freedom of the gospel in the relationships and struggles of everyday life. May God use this book to bring a wholeness and joy to believers that is irresistibly attractive to everyone around them.'
Ken Sande, President, Peacemaker Ministries
'Fitzpatrick and Johnson teach that effective counseling for broken and hurting people does not mean walking beyond the gospel into some modern form of psychotherapy, which ultimately provides no solutions. All Christians, especially pastors, counselors, and church workers who yearn to see genuine healing and transformation in their families and churches, should practice the principles of this book personally and use it to help others. This book is biblical counseling at its best; absorbing its teaching will make us all better counselors.'
Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary
'A treasure of gospel-proclaiming, biblical, and practical help for every person striving to grow in grace and help others to do the same. Professional counselors, church leaders, and laypeople will all benefit from the accessible case studies drawn from the authors' decades of experience ministering to real people in real situations. This is no mere how-to manual. If seemingly hopeless cycles of sin and immaturity are tempting you to wonder if real change is even possible, Counsel from the Cross is just the book to encourage you and help you to remember both what the gospel declares about us and what it demands of us.'
Tara Klena Barthel, Author, Living the Gospel in Relationships; coauthor, Peacemaking Women
'Elyse Fitzpatrick and Dennis Johnson present a compelling case for the very radical and eminently practical power of the gospel in helping counsel broken people. One will not find here the usual Scriptures taken out of context or mere proof-texting approach that so-much of Christian counseling has offered the evangelical community. Instead, Johnson's exegetical insights and Fitzpatrick's case-wise counsel show how and why we must apply the love and grace of Christ at each stage of our counseling. They are to be praised for mining the riches of the gospel and offering a real model for and recovery of Christ-centered counseling.'
Alfred J. Poirier, Author, The Peacemaking Pastor
'I've learned more about biblical counseling from Elyse Fitzpatrick than from anyone else writing in the field today. I tear into her new books, and return repeatedly to them for inspiration in my own work. Elyse's collaboration with Dennis Johnson has produced a volume that is both theologically astute and full of practical wisdom. I'm already applying the principles I've learned from it in my counseling.'

Capitalizing on recent advances in satellite imaging and geographic information systems, the Crossway ESV Bible Atlas offers Bible readers a comprehensive, up-to-date resource that blends technical sophistication with readability, visual appeal, and historical and biblical accuracy.
All the key methods of presenting Bible geography and history are here, including more than 175 full-color maps, 70 photographs, 3-D re-creations of biblical objects and sites, indexes, timelines, and 65,000 words of narrative description. The atlas uniquely features regional maps detailing biblically significant areas such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, Italy, and Greece. It also includes access to online maps and illustrations.
This carefully crafted reference tool not only sets a new standard in Bible atlases but will help ESV readers more clearly understand the world of the Bible and the meaning of Scripture.
“A remarkably beautiful and rich resource for historical, geographical, and archaeological background material that will deepen our understanding of each section of the Bible and increase our appreciation of the Bible's amazing historical accuracy.”
Wayne Grudem, Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary
“This Atlas is a wonderfully illustrated tool to aid the layperson, student of the Scripture, or pastor who wants to dig deeper and gain new insights and appreciation of the setting, context, and message of the Bible. The text is easy to follow, pictures are brilliant, and maps are incredibly useful as the reader moves through the related narratives. I highly recommend this marvelous resource.”
James K. Hoffmeier, Professor of Old Testament & Near Eastern Archaeology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
“During the 44 years I served as a college professor I used many good atlases. However, I have never seen one comparable to this in the breadth of material, the depth of coverage, and the outstanding quality of its impressive and abundantly illustrated maps and photos of Bible lands.”
John McRay, Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Archaeology, Wheaton College Graduate School, Wheaton, IL
“I had the privilege of being involved in the production of drawings based on the latest research for the ESV Study Bible. It is a joy to see these drawings plus the original ESV Study Bible maps, woven together with numerous new maps, brilliantly evocative photographs and useful indexes to make up the new Crossway Bible Atlas. This volume will become an indispensable companion for Bible students, fulfilling every expectation you might have of such a tool. Particularly innovative is the use of terrain imagery to facilitate the reader’s understanding of such Biblical viewpoints as that of Abraham from Hebron over the cities of the plain or Moses from Mt. Nebo.”

God’s people have neglected God’s law.
We are steeped in a culture in which people hate being told how to live and idolize uninhibited “freedom.” What’s more, many Christians seem to think the law only leads to legalism and therefore doesn’t have a role to play in the Christian life. Yet, regardless of what society or even fellow believers say, we need guidance to truly honor God in everything we think, say, and do.
Jerram Barrs helps us recognize and articulate the immense importance of God’s commands for godly living as he clears away unbiblical ideas that have crept into our thinking. Looking to the teachings of Jesus, this book will lead you to delight in the eternal beauty and life-changing significance of God’s perfect law.
“Jerram Barrs has given us a gripping account of how God’s law, understood through the grace released in Jesus Christ, is the best guide we could find. Barrs shows us the biblical path to a sane and balanced worldview, avoiding the pitfalls of utopian theocracy, libertarian naïveté, and cultural indifference. More than a guide, this book is an invitation to see God as our only comfort in life and in death. Delighting in the Law of the Lord is simply delightful!”
William Edgar, Professor of Apologetics, Westminster Theological Seminary
“We live in morally confusing times—confusing for the culture, confusing for the church. We’ve lost the compass, and, truth be told, when it comes to personal or societal issues, most of us Christians simply don’t think of the law of God as providing much guidance. ‘Think again!’ says Jerram Barrs. In his winsome across-the-kitchen-table style, Barrs explains why we need to retrieve afresh one of God’s greatest gifts. Churches will love this resource!”
Nicholas Perrin, Dean, Wheaton College Graduate School
“Jerram expounds the true nature and purpose of God’s law from the Psalms, which extol God’s law in light of the Bible story of creation and redemption, and he draws primarily on the Gospels for stories to illustrate how this perspective on God’s law works out in practice. All will find this book challenging and helpful, but I recommend it especially to those engaged in communication of the truth that is in Jesus, particularly preachers, Bible study groups, parents, and Christian schools.”
David Clyde Jones, Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology and Ethics, Covenant Theological Seminary; author, Biblical Christian Ethics
“Jerram Barrs gently but decisively charts a course that falls into neither the ditch of meaningless moral relativism, on the one side, nor the choking grip of Christian legalism, on the other. He convincingly shows the biblical importance of the law as an essential guide to Christian discipleship, service, and happiness, both personally and within the larger realities of the church and society. This catechesis of the way of the Lord should be in every ministry toolbox and is an absolute must-read by every Christian who wants to find greater integrity of life and deeper relationship with Christ, our fellow human beings, and God’s good creation.”

“Male and female he created them.” —Genesis 1:27
It’s one of the most important—and controversial—topics of our time.
God created men and women in his image—equal in value and complementary in roles. These distinctive roles are not the vestiges of a bygone era, but integral to God’s timeless good design for humanity.
Designed for Joy includes fresh contributions from fourteen young leaders, casting a unified vision for Christian manhood and womanhood. Whether discussing the significance of gender, the truth about masculinity and femininity, the blessing of purity, or the challenge of raising children in a confusing world, this practical resource challenges us to embrace God’s good design—for his glory and our joy.
“A fresh and engaging look at the rich, biblical teaching on gender. The world has lied to our generation: freedom and power are not found by throwing off the created order, but in recovering it. This book renewed in me an excitement to teach these concepts to a rising generation!”

The book of Deuteronomy is a call to obedience—the proper response to God’s faithfulness and love. Consisting primarily of speeches that Moses gave to the Israelites shortly before they entered the Promised Land, Moses’ words proclaimed God’s covenant faithfulness in hopes of motivating the Israelites to obey God despite the coming temptation to conform to the Canaanite culture.
The challenges they faced then are remarkably parallel to those facing Christians today as we grapple with the issue of obedience in a world that offers other attractive ways of life. We wonder: How can we be faithful to God? And how do we help our children and the people we lead to be faithful? This book tells us how Moses tackled these challenges and, as Paul confirms in the New Testament, Deuteronomy serves “as an example…written down for our instruction” (1 Cor. 10:11).
Ajith Fernando unpacks the relevance of Deuteronomy and captivates us with rich anecdotes from his thirty-five years of ministry to first-generation Christians in Sri Lanka. He offers concrete examples of how the truths contained in Deuteronomy can be applied, and he teaches us that obedience is the necessary response to the God who loves and saves us.
Part of the Preaching the Word series.
“Out of his broad experience of expounding the Scriptures, Dr. Fernando has given us a commentary that will appeal to all those who preach the Word. The work breathes a love for God, a deep understanding of Biblical theology, and a warmly poignant grasp of human nature—with its failings and its potentials. His applications of Deuteronomy’s teaching are both perceptive and relevant. While showing an awareness of scholarly treatments, the work is very accessible to those who do not have scholarly training. It is highly recommended.”
John Oswalt, Distinguished Professor of Old Testament, Asbury Theological Seminary
“Vintage Fernando. Like all of his preaching, this book is a model of the wonderful gift that God has given to Ajith Fernando for simple, clear, and challenging exposition of the Word of God. Without evading the more difficult questions and problems that scholars have wrestled with in the book of Deuteronomy, he does not allow them to dominate but stays close to the thrust of the text, patiently explaining and applying it step by step. The rich infusion of illustrations that are mostly drawn from the challenges and stresses, joys and sorrows of his own experience in ministry add a wonderful earthy texture to the whole book as we constantly weave between the Biblical world and today’s world in a way that listens to and engages with both. This book is a deep well of Biblical study, ethical challenge, practical advice, pastoral wisdom, and spiritual warmth. It breathes love for God, God’s Word, God’s world, and God’s people.”

When it comes to reading and understanding the Bible, a dangerous phrase is used by non-Christians and even some believers: 'Well, that's your interpretation.' It is true that without some care in your interpretation, you can 'make' the Bible say almost anything. Dig Deeper is written out of the conviction that there is a right way to understand the Bible and a wrong way, and the authors show us how to read it correctly.
Dig Deeper offers sixteen 'tools' readers can use to get to the bottom of any Bible passage and discover its intended meaning. Examples show how each tool helps readers discover something exciting and relevant in a passage, and the 'Dig deeper' exercises offer the opportunity to practice using the tools. The book's brevity and easy-to-read format make it ideal for Christians who want to get the most out of their Bible.
'Nigel and Andrew have written a great work on knowing God better, learning his will for your life, and reading your Bible. I like it. In fact, I think we'll start using it at our church.'
Mark Dever, Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington DC; President, 9Marks
'At last the book we have been waiting for, a modest-sized volume that lays out the cardinal principles of biblical exposition in clear, accessible, winsome language. I keep a stash of Dig Deeper in my office for gifts to aspiring preachers as well as to refresh my own preaching. A quickening read for all expositors and teachers of the Word!'
R. Kent Hughes, Visiting Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary
'As a minister to college students, I am constantly on the lookout for resources for thoughtful, bright, and passionate young people who are hungry to know the Word of God and hungry to teach it to others. Finding a book that is both deep and yet approachable is not always that easy, but I have found Nigel Beynon's and Andrew Sach's book to be both. This is a great hermeneutics 101 text, but it is more—it also consistently drives home the authority of the truth once one has found it in Scripture. So, this book is deep, approachable, and pastoral. That is a recipe that teaches the principles of interpretation and also fans the flames of zeal for God's Word. I would gladly put it in the hands of one of my students.'

Michael Beates's concern with disability issues began nearly 30 years ago when his eldest child was born with multiple profound disabilities. Now, as more families like his are affected by a growing number of difficulties ranging from down syndrome to autism to food allergies, the need for church programs and personal paradigm shifts is greater than ever.
Working through key Bible passages on brokenness and disability while answering hard questions, Michael offers helpful principles for believers and their churches. He shows us how to embrace our own brokenness and then to embrace those who are more physically and visibly broken, bringing hope and vision to those of us who need it most.
“Disability and the Gospel tackles head-on the spoken and too often unspoken questions about disability. Well researched and at times provocative, Michael Beates digs beyond the surface in search of reconciliation among the realities of suffering, disability, and the teachings of Scripture. Disability and the Gospel is an important work that reveals not only a biblical worldview on physical disability, but gives comforting confirmation that God is indeed always sovereign, always in charge, and all purposeful.”
Doug Mazza, President, Joni and Friends International Disability Center
“Mike Beates has been a good friend for twelve years, and I’ve observed his godly character as well as heard and read his insightful teaching. I have read Disability and the Gospel at several stages, and I recommend it highly. The church needs to be awakened to the presence of the disabled in our communities and, as Mike stresses, to the disabilities we all have as sinners in need of God’s grace. The book contains excellent exegesis, theology, and historical studies that make a powerful case. I don’t know a better place to hear God’s Word on this important matter.”
John M. Frame, J. D. Trimble Chair of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando
“Why should the church embrace people with disabilities? Because they need us? Perhaps. But in Disability and the Gospel, Michael Beates reminds us that the transforming power of the gospel can only be ours when we, the able-bodies, admit our own brokenness and weakness and learn the truth that God uses the weak people of this world to confound the wise. The church has as much to learn form people with disabilities as she has to give to them.”
Dawn Clark, Director of Disability Ministries, College Church, Wheaton, Illinois
“Disability and the Gospel is a wonderful book! It’s biblical, profound, practical, and challenging. It is also a book written at the right time and by the right person. Every Christian in America needs read this book, and every church should study it, underline it, and live it! What a gift Michael Beates has given to us and to those to whom the church is called to show mercy, understanding and compassion. I rise up and call Mike Beates blessed. Read this book. You will too!”
Steve Brown, Host, Key Life Radio Program; author, Three Free Sins: God Isn't Mad At You
“In Disability and the Gospel, Michael Beates urges Christians to invite people with disabilities into our churches and our lives not because they need our help, but because worshiping and ministering alongside people with disabilities helps us to recognize our own brokenness and learn that God’s grace is most apparent and powerful when we are most weak and wounded. While my own theology of disability differs from Beates’s in significant ways, I recommend this thorough, accessible book for pastors, congregations, and individuals who want to engage more fully with those in their communities living with disabilities, and thus live out the Gospel in new and transforming ways.”

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” —Jesus
This is a book about pursuit. How God pursues people. How we pursue him. And how he uses us to pursue others.
God pursued us when Jesus came into this ruined world as an agent of redemption, asking us to follow him and to become his disciples. Yet, what does Jesus actually mean by disciple? And as his disciples, what is our mission?
Pastor Bill Clem masterfully answers these questions, explaining what Jesus meant when he called his followers “disciples”, and what he intended when he told us to then make disciples. This helpful guide weaves together Scripture and real-life stories to illustrate the essential elements of Christian discipleship.
Whether you’ve just become a follower of Jesus or you’ve been one for years, Disciple will help you see that Jesus invites his people to freedom rather than mere rule keeping, and it will give you a relational framework—instead of behavioral prescriptions—for pursuing God.
“Listen to the wise words of a seasoned pastor who knows that being a disciple of Jesus is much more than developing biblical literacy and theological knowledge. Learn how grace embeds your little story in the larger story of redemption and transforms your heart in the process.”
Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, What Did You Expect?
“Bill Clem uses his powerful storytelling ability, theological insights, and personal journey to speak straight to the heart of discipleship. Reading this book was like having a cup of coffee with one of the most influential thinkers and ministry leaders of our day.”
David Livermore, president, Cultural Intelligence Center; author, Serving with Eyes Wide Open
“In all my ministry years I have never met anyone who is more adept and passionate about the subject and lifestyle of discipleship. This book will not be one you half read and then set aside for the next garage sale; it will be part of your permanent library, used to equip yourself and others for years to come. In fact, I wager you will read and reread this. It’s that good! Disciple challenges us all to dig deeper so that we might learn what it means to be a true follower of Jesus and to help others to do the same.”
Mike Love, founder, director, Extreme Dream Ministries
“Bill Clem shattered all of my preconceptions of discipleship, but in so doing he masterfully painted a beautiful portrait of what a disciple is and what discipleship looks like. A must-read for anyone serious about making gospel-centered disciples.”
Carlos Montoya, Lead Pastor, Blaze Christian Fellowship, Santa Fe, New Mexico
“Through both his writing and his life, Bill Clem has given us an inspiring vision of what it looks like to live out our identity as disciples of Jesus.”
Pete Kelley, Lead Pastor, Doxology, Corvallis, Oregon
“Disciple connects the relational community of the triune God to his image bearers in the greatest nonfiction story of all—the story of God. The privilege of playing our part in his story is masterfully told by Clem. Not only is Disciple a ‘great read’; it is a ‘must-study.’'
Mark A. Hoeffner, Executive Director, CB Northwest; Lead Elder, Grace Baptist Church, White Salmon, Washington
“Bill has been one the most influential pastors shaping my thinking on discipleship. He brings a holistic, gospel-centered, Jesus-exalting approach to the ongoing formation of the redeemed people of God. I thank God for Bill’s impact on my life and I trust that you will as well after reading this book.”

Maybe discipline seems like a hard word to you—implying nothing but challenge and duty. Yet most of us see the value in cultivating spiritual disciplines, and we long to be more consistent in our relationship with God, even in the midst of our busy lives.
Combining biblical teaching, poignant stories, and insightful reflection questions, Barbara Hughes explores 15 vital disciplines in this classic book—helping us to mature as godly Christian women and giving meaningful shape to our lives.
“Barbara Hughes shares both God’s Word and the joy of living it. In her own warm voice, she invites women to believe and to adorn the gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s an invitation not to a list of abstract disciplines, but to the grace of God that trains us in all the layers of real life.”
Kathleen B. Nielson, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition
“This book is a treasure chest of Biblical wisdom. As Barbara urges us to fight the flab in our Christian lives, she generously shares the ways in which God has chiseled away at her life to make her the disciplined woman of faith that she is today. Her writing is thought provoking, stimulating, moving, encouraging, and deeply challenging. Every Christian woman who longs to be more like Jesus should read this book.”
Lindsay Benn, wife to the former bishop of Lewes, The Church of England
“Disciplines of a Godly Woman is not a legalistic ten-step plan or checklist. Rather it is Titus 2:3–5 in action, as Barbara Hughes becomes our sister, mother and grandmother in the Lord, challenging us to trust and honor God in the whole of life. After a lifetime in pastoral ministry and family life, Barbara knows the challenges we face as sinners living in a world crowded with ideas and pressures. She also knows that God’s Word provides the wisdom we need and the cross of Christ provides the grace we need. At a time when many younger women are seeking mentors, and many older women feel ill-equipped for the task, this book is a wise and loving answer to both.”
Dr. Claire Smith, Bible teacher and author, God’s Good Design: What the Bible Really Says about Men and Women
“As Christian women we long to have our lives give glory to God. This wise book walks us through the practical disciplines of being a woman who lives under God’s authority. I highly recommend it.”
Margaret Grudem, Scottsdale, Arizona
“The word ‘discipline’ often carries with it notions of rigidity and structure. Thankfully, Barbara Hughes is not here to give a heavy-handed list of rules and regulations for the woman who simply cannot find time to do any more than she already does. In this helpful, classic book Barbara walks us through the right kind of discipline, one that serves eternal purposes. She shows us that the way towards godliness is not through our own efforts, but the efforts of Another—our Christ.”
Courtney Reissig, wife; mom; Assistant Editor, The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood; author, The Accidental Feminist
“This book captures Barbara Hughes’ deep Biblical insight and practical wisdom. Whether read on your own or in a group, Disciplines of a Godly Woman is helpful for women of any age or circumstance. It is a reminder that life change doesn’t happen by accident or overnight, and that godly living is not a mystery.”
Ainsley Poulos, Chair, EQUIP ministry wives
“Through Disciplines of a Godly Woman, Barbara Hughes has been a cherished mentor to me. She has taught me what it means to be a gospel-centered woman, and the Holy Spirit used the book to ignite in me a greater desire to know God through his Word. Not a ‘white-knuckle’ do-better book on spiritual disciplines, it addresses the heart and gives deeply thoughtful advice on how a woman can center her life on Christ. This book is my first choice to read with other women, and we recommend it regularly at our church. Read this book; let it change your life; and, then, share it with others.”
Keri Folmar, pastor’s wife, the United Christian Church of Dubai; mother of three; author, Joy! A Bible Study on Philippians for Women
“As I look back on my own life as a woman and mother, I am aware of how much I would have benefited from this book. This book is helpful in liberating women from cultural misconceptions about the role of discipline and submission in the Christian life. Barbara Hughes is superbly qualified to write from the heart on the subjects that she takes up by her lifetime of ministry to women, leadership in women’s Bible studies, and service as a pastor's wife.”
Mary Ryken, retired counselor; homemaker
“Barbara’s warm, clear, and engaging style combined with challenges, ideas for further reading, and a firm grasp of the gospel’s power to transform our lives makes this of great help for Christian women everywhere.”
Shiona Rees, pastor’s wife, Edinburgh, Scotland

Point blank, this is a punchy, no-holds-barred book for young men. Laying out the challenge to be disciplined, godly, and sold-out for Jesus, the authors talk about purity in your thought-life, cultural pressure, and perseverance as a Christian. Let father and son Kent and Carey Hughes help you live a life of integrity and become the man God is calling you to be.
“For a book to keep your interest, it’s most important that it captures your heart’s yearning from the beginning. This book is relevant, theological, culturally astute, and challenging for the serious student. It is a resource for pastors and a tool for discipleship for lay leaders. It is a MUST READ.”
Steve Keels, Student Ministries Pastor for 32 years; Next Generation Pastor, Good Shepherd Community Church, Boring, Oregon; author; Truth Quest books
“This is a really uncomfortable book. I can honestly say that I read something troubling on every page. I am therefore so grateful to God for this great aid to the overriding aim of all of our lives: Christlikeness—read it and repent.”
Rico Tice, Evangelist; author, Christianity Explored
“In a male culture marked by spiritual apathy and passivity, this book serves as a clarion call to single-minded discipline, radical purity, and kingdom purpose. Weaving together biblical wisdom and memorable illustrations from history and popular culture, Disciplines of a Godly Young Man provides clear and compelling guidance on every page. I can scarcely think of a book more necessary for the emerging men of the next generation.”
David Setran, Associate Professor of Christian Formation and Ministry, Wheaton College; author, The College “Y”: Student Religion in the Era of Secularization
“Discipline is not a popular word these days. But disciplined Christians are growing Christians. So if you know a young man who wants to grow up in the faith, do him a big favor and buy him this book.”
Collin Hansen, Editorial Director, The Gospel Coalition; author, Blind Spots
“Be warned. You may struggle with this book at first—not because it is hard to read, but because Kent Hughes and his son Carey Hughes show from the Bible the high benchmark that God demands of your young life. They lay it out on the table, simply and clearly, chapter by chapter, discipline by discipline, and then they invite you to live the life God requires. Of course, young Australian men will need to read their own heroes into the first chapter; but they will recognize the biblical heroes in chapter 11; and hopefully, they will recognize the love and power of the one Hero: Jesus Christ, when they read the final chapter about grace. Make sure you read this book to the end.”
Justin Moffatt, Senior Minister, St. Philip’s, York Street Anglican, Sydney, Australia
“This book is a serious wake-up call for young men who seek to follow Christ. With its straightforward tone and gospel-grounded challenges, this is a perfect introduction to the spiritual disciplines for young men who love Jesus. I look forward to reading and studying this book with our high school guys.”

What does it look like to help others become more like Christ?
In this concise guide, pastor Mark Dever outlines the who, what, where, when, why, and how of discipling—helping others follow Jesus.
Following the pattern found in Scripture, this book explains how disciple-making relationships should function in the context of the local church, teaching us how to cultivate a culture of discipling as a normal part of our everyday lives.
“If you want to move to another level in your spiritual life and leadership, take the time to read this book. It is not just biblical, but practical and readable. The emphasis on the local church and its role in discipling others sets it apart from other books. Read it and share it with others.”
Ronnie Floyd, Former President, The Southern Baptist Convention; Senior Pastor, Cross Church, Springdale, Arkansas
“Mark Dever is known for being a faithful, exegetical preacher of God’s Word. But what you may not know is that Mark is an intentional disciple-maker. Whether he’s meeting on Saturday with lay leaders over lunch to discuss his application grid for Sunday’s message or discussing church polity in his study with a group of young interns, Mark emulates what he expects from others. I believe his legacy will not be just on the pages of the books he has penned, but on the hearts of the men he’s invested in personally. Don’t just read this book. Implement the biblical principles found within.”
Robby Gallaty, Senior Pastor, Long Hallow Baptist Church, Hendersonville, Tennessee
“I love reading books written by authors who are zealous about the subjects they write about. I often feel like emulating their example even before I get to the last page of the book. If you know Mark Dever, then you know he is a committed discipler. Discipleship oozes out of him. What drives him and how he disciples others and gets his church members to do the same is what these pages are all about. Prepare yourself for a life-changing experience as you read this book!”
Conrad Mbewe, Pastor, Kabwata Baptist Church, Lusaka, Zambia
“This book convicts, exhorts, and instructs followers of Christ concerning the call to a life of discipling others. It also offers warm-hearted glimpses of this call being answered in the life of a pastor and his congregation. Mark Dever takes us to the Scriptures and roots us in the church, with particular focus on church leaders and careful attention to all. This makes much sense, but we need to be reminded that the process of discipling others is every believer’s clear and joyful calling.”
Kathleen B. Nielson, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition
“With simple yet profound insights, Mark Dever takes Jesus’s final command to make disciples and teaches us what that means for us and for our churches. By answering our questions—the why, the what, the where, and the how of discipling—Pastor Mark coaches us in how to follow Christ by helping others to follow him, to know the truth, and to live it well. Every follower of Christ needs to read this book! It’s the best book I’ve ever read on discipling.”
Jani Ortlund, Executive Vice President, Renewal Ministries; author, Fearlessly Feminine and His Loving Law, Our Lasting Legacy
“Here is a church-strengthening book full of down-to-earth advice about the nuts and bolts of discipling. Dever’s love for Jesus and his people shines throughout, and his firm placement of discipleship within the context and bounds of the local church is vintage Dever ecclesiology. He has a keen eye for pastors, addressing them about their role with warmth and clarity. I was personally challenged by Dever, who himself has a track record of prioritizing discipleship in the midst of all his other responsibilities. If Mark does it, I can do it!”
Grant J. Retief, Rector, Christ Church, Umhlanga, Durban, South Africa
“Dever reminds readers that discipling is a biblical mandate, motivated by obedience to Christ’s commandment and love for others, and it is not an effort reserved for a select few. It does not reduce people to projects, but rather it seeks to intentionally develop a relationship with them. It requires time invested in the lives of people who are interested and motivated to follow Jesus. Finally, only truly humble teachers should disciple Jesus’s sheep, because ‘when a disciple is fully trained, he will be like his teacher.’ These emphases and more are contained within this book. Upon reading it, you will most likely recommend it to others. I know I will.”
Miguel Núñez, Senior Pastor, International Baptist Church, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; President, Wisdom & Integrity Ministries

There is a radical, biblical alternative to much of what is taught and practiced today regarding relationships. Doing Things Right in Matters of the Heart presents a bold plan for escaping the swift currents of contemporary patterns of hooking up, shacking up, and breaking up. It draws a compelling vision of complementarity between the sexes. It instructs men on what to do and informs women on what to look for in their mutual pursuit of a healthy, tender, long-term relationship.
'Doing Things Right in Matters of the Heart defines and describes biblical masculinity and femininity for single adults. I would also encourage those who are married to read it. John Ensor is a creative and theologically astute writer. I have thanked him for writing this book and you will too.'
C. J. Mahaney, Senior Pastor, Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky
'John Ensor provides a radically biblical alternative to the supposed wisdom of our age. Though sometimes raw, frank, and frustrated, Ensor is always sanctified and often poetic. He celebrates differences, bringing into clear focus the oft-disputed fact that God created men and women to be equal and symmetrical but not identical. For all who are weary of our culture's assault on biblical manhood and womanhood, this book is a refreshing reminder of the Bible's simple wisdom governing love, relationships, marriage, and matters of the heart.'

Recent cultural interest in evangelicalism has led to considerable confusion about what the term actually means. Many young Christians are tempted to discard the label altogether. But evangelicalism is not merely a political movement in decline or a sociological phenomenon on the rise, as it has sometimes been portrayed. It is, in fact, a helpful theological profile that manifests itself in beliefs, ethics, and church life.
DeYoung and other key twenty- and thirty-something evangelical Christian leaders present Don’t Call It a Comeback: The Same Evangelical Faith for a New Day to assert the stability, relevance, and necessity of Christian orthodoxy today. This book introduces young, new, and under-discipled Christians to the most essential and basic issues of faith in general and of evangelicalism in particular.
Kevin DeYoung and contributors like Russell Moore, Justin Taylor, Thabiti Anyabwile, and Tim Challies examine what evangelical Christianity is and does within the broad categories of history, theology, and practice. They demonstrate that evangelicalism is still biblically and historically rooted and remains the same framework for faith that we need today.
Part of The Gospel Coalition series.
“I absolutely love this book! First, each chapter solidly tackles a critical component of our Evangelical faith and practice. Second, the authors demonstrate not only a strong grasp of God’s Word, but also of the perspective of church history, which is sadly lacking in most contemporary books. Third, these guys write tight, making every sentence count, so even though it packed with truth, the book is a quick read. I am so proud of these brilliant, godly men.”
Rick Warren, #1 New York Times best-selling author, The Purpose Driven Life; Pastor, Saddleback Church
“It brings this aging man great joy to see a rising generation address contemporary questions with theologically informed answers. These are the right guys, on the right topics, at the right time.”
C. J. Mahaney, Senior Pastor, Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky
“Sometimes I wonder how I could have spent my entire life in the church, safely ensconced in the evangelical subculture, and yet have such a difficult time articulating the essence of significant biblical concepts and convictions that I claim to have built my life upon. And I don’t think I’m alone. Don’t Call It a Comeback is more than just a primer for the young and uninitiated; it is essential reading for all who want to make sure they are clear and convinced on the things that matter most.”

'Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation.' 1 Peter 2:2
It's a fact of life: our health declines if we don't nourish our bodies every day with food and water. That's true physically. It's true spiritually as well.
If we neglect to regularly feed our souls on the Holy Scriptures, our faith becomes weak and we start to lose touch with our Savior. Growth is stifled... if it happens at all.
Drawing Near, used daily in combination with God's Holy Word, can not only help bring you closer to God but also keep you from spiritual stagnation. This book will guide you in a growing relationship with Him.
As Pastor MacArthur says in his Introduction: 'Our entertainment-conscious, quick-fix, fast-food society does everything it can to divert us from setting aside time to study God's Word. As you well know from your own efforts, Bible study is not often entertaining—it's hard work. It takes discipline to set aside time each day to reap the benefits such study has to offer. If you reach an impasse when it's time to sit down, open your Bible, and try to decide what to do, you're not alone. Without some plan to follow, it's easy to become frustrated and eventually give up after only one or two days. That's where this book comes in.'
If you desire greater understanding of the precious Word of God, if you want a daily guide to draw you closer to the Lord, this outstanding collections of 365 devotional readings by one of America's most respected and trusted Bible teachers is for you!

Art is all around you.
Yet few of us can effectively explain why certain movies, books, plays, and songs resonate so profoundly within us, and more importantly how they attest to God’s character.
Professor Jerram Barrs gives us the three key elements for evaluating great art. He then puts those qualifiers to the test by investigating five of the world’s most influential authors—empowering us to better understand the character of God and helping others to know him too.
“Echoes of Eden is the most accessible, readable, and yet theologically robust work on Christianity and the arts that you will be able to find. It is biblical, theologically sound, filled with examples, and edifying. It anticipates and answers well all the most common questions that evangelical people ask about the arts. I highly recommend it.”
Timothy J. Keller, Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City; best-selling author, The Reason for God
“Jerram Barrs clearly loves the Christian vision of being human, and he loves human beings of all sorts. In this book he helps us to enjoy the fundamentally human activity of the arts, showing us how ‘all great art contains elements of the true story: the story of the good creation, the fallen world, and the longing for redemption.’ The chapters giving us a tour of great Christian writers—Lewis, Tolkien, Rowling, Shakespeare, and Austen—bubble over with passionate delight in these authors’ artistic and moral achievements.”
C. John Collins, Professor of Old Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary; author, The God of Miracles, Science, and Faith: Friends or Foes?
“For as long as I have known him, Jerram Barrs has passionately loved the arts. In Echoes of Eden he lets us share his passion by allowing us a glimpse of the beauty, truth, and grace he sees in the imaginative work of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, William Shakespeare, and Jane Austen. If he stopped there, this would be a book worth reading, but he digs far deeper, framing our understanding of the arts within the biblical worldview. From that perspective, human creativity is a good gift of God in a broken world, an expression of the image of the Creator in which we are made. Because of the brokenness, Barrs outlines eleven broad categories by which to judge a piece of art, since God’s image is always portrayed in ways that are flawed and incomplete. I hope Echoes of Eden is read and discussed widely by Christians. The truth of its message can help nurture a Christian imagination, restore the arts to their proper place in the church, and help us frame the unchanging gospel in a way that will cause a postmodern world to consider its claims.”
Denis Haack, Director, Ransom Fellowship; Visiting Instructor in practical theology, Covenant Seminary
“Evangelical Christianity has long been conflicted over the arts and in particular the literary artistry of such lights as Austen, Tolkien, and Rowling. Some justify such literature only insofar as it functions as an elaborately coded gospel tract. Others, despairing of any Christian rationale, confess such writings to be a distraction, a guilty pleasure, or even satanic. Now, with his typical blend of profundity and lucidity, Jerram Barrs clears away the clutter of much-touted but ultimately muddled arguments and sets forth a clear framework for any Christians interested in thinking biblically about art, not least those Christians who like to spend time in such places as Hogwarts or Middle-earth. Turn the page and prepare to worship!”
Nicholas Perrin, Dean, Wheaton College Graduate School
“A beautiful book on the contours of beauty by a beautiful man. Jerram Barrs here presents a lifetime of meditations on a subject close to his heart. The arts, he argues, are not a luxury, nor are they the savior. Instead they are an integral part of human life because they provide a unique window onto divine truth and the truth of the divine. The chapter on how to judge the arts is alone worth the price of admission. Reading these pages one can tell that art is not the subject for Jerram, but a rich palette, one he has lived with over the years. The arts, in his assessment, tell us not only what has been lost after Eden, but also how we may return to that gorgeous land. This book will enrich both professional artists and anyone else sensitive to the power of the arts for all of life.”
William Edgar, Professor of Apologetics, Westminster Theological Seminary
“One of the obvious virtues of this book is its balance between theory and literary criticism of specific authors. The first five chapters are a carefully constructed Christian aesthetic. The second half of the book applies the theory to five authors. The splendid organization of the book makes it easy to read, and there is an admirable range in the subjects covered, as the five theoretic chapters systematically discuss the questions that Christians really ask about the arts, while the addition of Shakespeare and Jane Austen to Christian fantasy writers provides a pleasing scope. Finally, the book has a latent apologetic angle that I liked, not only in the theoretic chapters with their defense of the arts, but also in the chapters on specific authors, as Barrs explains why he is an enthusiast for each of them.”
Leland Ryken, Emeritus Professor of English, Wheaton College
'This is a wonderful book, especially for those who want to enhance their knowledge of how the church should view the arts. Jerram Barrs brings an intellectually informed and profoundly pastoral approach to confront the misunderstanding and animosity that frequently exist between evangelical Christians and popular contemporary literature such as the Harry Potter series. This book is a must read for anyone who has a burden to see the creation as it is reflected in today’s pop culture.”
Mike Higgins, Dean of Students, Covenant Theological Seminary
“This is a marvelous book for Christians who wish to think well and biblically about culture. Professor Barrs’s thesis—that human cultural production always has its genesis in something I have for years called the ‘Edenic memory’—is spot on. By providing a careful theological analysis of the origins of culture, the book teaches us how to live wisely and rightly in a world overflowing with cultural artifacts. Barrs’s observation on the nature and role of fantasy in the Harry Potter chapter is particularly thoughtful, and his chapter on how we are to judge the arts is as fine as anything I’ve read on the subject.”
Grant Horner, Associate Professor of Renaissance and Reformation, The Master’s College; author, Meaning at the Movies
“When a lawyer asked Jesus, ‘Who is my neighbor?’ Jesus didn’t preach a sermon; he told a story, and with it he disclosed a profound truth. In Echoes of Eden, Jerram Barrs shows us how novelists, playwrights, and poets—much like Jesus—open our eyes and broaden our understanding. He shows us how, by creating worlds, people, problems, and circumstances, great writers put us in touch with the human condition: the struggles and joys, as well as the grief and great satisfactions. In these few pages, Barrs shows us why, especially in the twenty-first century, we need good books: they help us become fully human.”
Richard Doster, Editor, byFaith magazine; author, Safe at Home
“In a clear and attractive style, Jerram Barrs writes with passion about the ‘Echoes of Eden’ in the arts, which are so central to our humanity, whatever our beliefs. Graciously and with wisdom, he picks up a conversation that has already included such Christian thinkers as John Calvin, Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis. Illustrations that he draws from the fiction of Lewis, Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, the still enormously popular Jane Austen, and others make even more vivid his insightful reflections. Reading his gift of a book is an enriching and inspiring experience not to be missed.”
Colin Duriez, author, Tolkien and C.S. Lewis: The Gift of Friendship, A-Z of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend
“Jerram Barrs offers a compelling Christian defense of the imagination as a vehicle of truth and of the need to reclaim an imitative (as opposed to a self-expressive) view of the arts. He not only quotes C. S. Lewis wisely, but has written a book of which Lewis would have approved.”

It doesn’t patronize children with low expectations but addresses them as fellow followers of and joint heirs with Christ. I look forward to using this Bible extensively with my children. I recommend it highly.”
Russell D. Moore, President, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; author, Onward
“Imagine . . . a generation of young people who are wholly committed to enjoying God because they understand and love the unified message of the Bible. The theologically rich study helps in this Bible will prove to be a powerful resource for our children as they seek to walk in the truth.”
Gloria Furman, pastor’s wife, Redeemer Church of Dubai; author, The Pastor's Wife and Missional Motherhood
“The clear explanations regarding customs, terms, and concepts contained in the ESV Following Jesus Bible make it a helpful guide to understanding the Bible text for children, while maintaining the integrity of the ESV text. Children will benefit from this edition.”
David and Sally Michael, founders of Children Desiring God, Minneapolis, MN
“As the mother of an 8 year old boy, I was thrilled to learn about the ESV Following Jesus Bible. Reading this Bible will enable him to learn in greater depth the who, what, when, where, and why of the Scriptures. With great illustrations, clear definitions of key terms, and character analysis, kids will gain foundational understanding of God’s Word before transitioning to a more advanced edition. The ESV Following Jesus Bible is a perfect next step from elementary Bible teaching to the pre-teen years.”
